The two main sections of a jet engine include the Cold Section and the Hot section.

The Cold Section includes:

  • Air Intake (inlet)
  • Compressor
  • Bypass ducts
  • Shaft
  • Diffuser section

The Hot Section Includes:

  • Combustor
  • Turbine
  • Afterburner
  • Exhaust
  • Supersonic Nozzle.

All of the various components will have constraints on how they are put together so that they produce the most efficiency.

Due to the nature of how a jet engine works, materials that are used will require high heat resistance and the ability to retain their strength, toughness, fatigue and microstructure stability at the high working temperatures of a jet engine. For this reason nickel, iron-nickel and cobalt alloys are widely used in the aerospace industry.
