The majority of modern passenger and military aircraft vehicles are powered by gas turbine engines, which are also known at jet engines. There are several different types of jet engines, which will have some parts in common, but all engines have a compressor.
The compressor increases the pressure of the incoming air before it enters the combustor and the performance of the compressor will have a major influence on the overall performance of the engine.
There are two types of compressors, which are axial and centrifugal. Axial compressors are called so because the flow travels parallel to the axis of rotation. The centrifugal compressor is called so because the flow is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Generally modern turbojet and turbofan engines will usually use axial compressors.
