Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) is the removal process of sulphur dioxide (SO 2) from flue gas emissions, often chemically. Sulphur dioxide in gases is produced by the combustion of fossil fuels and many industrial processes such as gasoline refining as well as cement, paper, glass, steel, iron and copper production. Burning coal in power stations was a major source of sulphur dioxide, but there are ways of removing this from the flue gases, known as "flue gas desulphurisation". The best of these methods allows the sulphur dioxide to be recovered and then converted into sulphuric acid.
